The General Motors brand GMC has a long and proud history. In 1902 brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky founded the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1909, General Motors purchased this company, which then became the General Motors Truck Company, or GMC as we know it today.

The name GMC Trucks first appeared on a model GM displayed at the New York Auto Show in 1912 and the named was patented eight months later.

GM did not waste any time improving its trucks. With a decade or so, its trucks boasted headlights attached to the radiator, curvier fenders, and chrome-plated radiator trim. In 1926, a 2-ton GMC truck drove from New York to San Francisco in just five days and 30 minutes-a monumental feat at the time.

In the 1930s, GMC trucks gained more car-like interior, making them much more comfortable to drive. The trucks also became more streamline with swooping fenders, sloping grilles, smooth lines from front to back and more paint color options than before. Sales were increasing year after year.

During World War II, GMC helped with the war effort by producing 600,000 trucks for the U.S. Armed Forces. After the war, it continued to produce quality trucks with bold styling and a number of great improvements. These vintage trucks are still popular today for their great style.

Over the next few decades, GMC trucks got bigger and more capable. The first Crew Cab made its appearance in the 1970s along with the first dual rear axle.

In the 1980s, the GMC truck lineup permanently adopted the Sierra name, which has previously only been used as a trim level. This decade also brought a more aerodynamic design.

1996 saw the first standalone use of GMC and this decade also saw the introduction of hydroforming, which meant that the trucks' frames were lighter and stronger than ever.

Over the next two decades, GMC has continued to become more efficient with more aerodynamic designers, closer-fitting body panels, fuel-efficient engine options, and more.
